Recently there has been media attention focused on animals being left in hot cars. This coverage has been helpful in bringing attention to this deadly situation and getting the message out on how to keep your pets safe during these hot days. It is not an exaggeration that in just minutes the internal temperature of a vehicle can rise to well over 115 degrees. There is no safe amount of time an animal can handle this level of heat.
I understand that many people don't mean to put their animal in harms way when they take their dogs in the car for a few quick errands. The reality of the situation is that a brief stop at the store while your dog rests in the car could turn into tragedy. Unfortunately in many of these cases it is ignorance that is the cause of preventable suffering. The message is simple - leave your pet at home. Please help educate your friends and family to this important lesson. Your conversation may be the reason they stop and think before taking their animal out in the car when the temperatures rise…
If you have concerns about unsupervised animals left in hot cars please call City of Boulder Animal Care and Control at 303-441-3333. An officer will be dispatched to provide a welfare check and ensure the animal gets the proper care needed. Together we can keep the animals of our community safe!
Pet ownership is a great responsibility and better planning should go to the day to day activities that include pets. This is a very informative article.
