On Tuesday morning we discovered a litter of pit bull puppies had been stolen from the Humane Society. The adoption center door had been pryed open sometime the night before. I am angry and sickened by this theft. The good news is that we have located 5 of the 8 pitbulls that were taken, however three remain missing. The 5 that were found were located in two different places, all within a mile of the shelter.
We are greatly concerned for the welfare of these wonderful dogs. What kind of person would do this? Breaking into a shelter, taking innocent animals... What was the motivation? How could someone do this?? Now that we have found some of them, just wandering around, I find the situation even more puzzling. For now our number one priority is finding the rest of this litter. Local media has helped get the word out with photos and information on who to call. It is my hope that they will all be returned in the coming days.
For the organization, this means we have to take further steps to secure our facility. We will take the steps necessary to reduce the risk of this happening again. This means spending resources that we would have used for direct animal care which only makes this theft more maddening. But the safety of the animals in our care is paramount and so we will do what we need to do.
I suppose we have been lucky, this year was the first time in my tenure at HSBV that we were broken into. But it only has to happen once. It only takes one animal being affected to change all of that.
Please keep these puppies in your thoughts as we continue our search. We are thankful for the support of the City of Boulder Police Department and Boulder County Animal Care and Control. There is an active investigation and we will do all we can to find the people responsible. I will keep you posted on the outcome and you will hear as soon as we find the other three dogs. Thank you for your continued support for all of the animals in our care.

I think that stealing puppies is so wrong. I don't get what purpose someone would have for doing such a thing. If they really wanted those puppies they could have just payed the fee. Its not like they were expensive or anything. I know I will keep my eyes peeled and I hope that they are safely returned. Good luck HSBV!
