Whew it is hot out there! And truly we are seeing the Dog Days of summer here at HSBV... Every summer is busy at the shelter, with more animals coming in as strays, litters of kittens and puppies arriving etc. This summer has not been as busy as others, our incoming animals from the community has held steady which is a great thing. As always we open our doors to every animal who comes to us and we reach out to other agencies and shelters to help with the volume of animals they are receiving.
In the last week we have seen a dramatic increase in the animals we are sheltering. There have been many factors to this, from long term residents that haven't found that perfect match with a new family, to an influx of transfers as shelters hit their capacity in this busy season, to a slow down of adoptions as people are on vacation at the end of summer.
I have been so impressed with the creativity in our staff and volunteers who somehow find a way to make room for all of the animals in need. Our shelter and clinic departments have worked together to get animals spayed and neutered as soon as possible. Volunteers and our Animal Welfare Associates have advocated for cats and dogs that have been with us for weeks. We have reconfigured areas in our impound kennels to find more space for new arrivals. Working with our transfer partners we have planned our incoming animals according to the space we have etc.
It has made our staff and volunteers jobs more challenging and throughout this period everyone remains committed to help as many animals as possible. That is why we reach out to you our community to ask for extra help this time of year. From donations to assist with the medical and behavioral rehabilitation we provide, to wish list items that keep our animals healthy and happy while they are with us, to adopters giving homeless animals the second chance they so deserve, your support allows us to save lives.
Now is the time to spread the word about the great animals we have available! With high volume comes great variety, from young puppies and kittens to the purrfect lap cat or couch potato dog, we have a special friend for anyone looking. Just come take a look! Or if your household is full of 4 legged friends, consider making a donation today to help get us through this critical time.
Thanks for your support and for helping be an advocate for the animals of HSBV!
