Ike Update

We spoke to our team for the first time today and got some first hand reports on what is going on in Galveston.  The team from Colorado is maintaining a temporary shelter that as of last night had more than 300 animals housed.  They will begin transferring some of these to the Houston SPCA so they have room to take in additional pets.  The staff is working hard, going to bed very tired and it sounds like the team is working very well together to meet the needs of these displaced animals.  They report that the animals have by and large had great temperaments despite their recent ordeals and they already have favorites... 

We hope to have some photos soon and will post those so you can see for yourself our staff in action.

Hurricane Update

Our team of three staff has been deployed to Galveston to help with the set up and running of a temporary animal shelter on Galveston Island.  Communication with our team is difficult because the phone lines and cell towers are still down.  The Houston SPCA is coordinating relief and rescue operations and our team is working with their staff along with over 50 other people from other organizations who were deployed to the area.  We hope to have more details in the next few days.  Please keep our staff and those affected by the storm and it's aftermath in your thoughts!

A Cause for Paws is SATURDAY!!

There is still time to register and join us on Saturday for our 19th annual A Cause for Paws Walk a Thon and Doggie Dash!  The 3k Walk and 5K run are a great way to start your weekend and our pancake breakfast and pet expo will make the event fun for everyone.  I know my dog Hailey is looking forward to sneaking a pancake or two!

Hurricane Ike Assistance

At 6am this morning three HSBV staff left for Texas to provide assistance with the shelter and care of animals evacuated due to Hurricane Ike.  The Dumb Friends League was contacted by the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals asking for a team to be deployed and they contacted us and the Larimer Humane Society to assemble a team of 15 people.  We do not know what city they will be assigned to yet, as the course of the storm becomes more specific and the greatest areas of need are identified they will determine their destination. 

We are honored to assist our colleagues and I am proud of the quick response from our staff when we asked for volunteers for the trip.  Throughout the country animal welfare teams are responding to this storm and will work together to meet whatever needs arise throughout the gulf coast.  As you may recall we sent teams to assist when Hurricane Katrina hit and the lessons we learned in that storm have enhanced how our agencies collaborate to assist. 

I will be sure to keep you posted on their deployment, we hope to have email updates and photos we care share with you.  Please keep our team in your thoughts as well as the people and animals affected by Ike.
